What is Paediatric Counselling?

Counsellors are mental health professionals that support their clients to develop strategies to manage emotional, mental or lifestyle challenges. Paediatric counselling is counselling that is tailored towards working with children and young people and may also include adjusted modalities to support young people to feel safe, empowered, express their feelings and explore topics that may be difficult for them. Counselling sessions can be flexible in their delivery and structure to ensure that they are meeting the needs of the child or young person, and each session may include different activities, tasks or interventions. Counselling sessions have the option to occur face-to-face or via telehealth.

At The Tribe, counselling includes:
-
Using evidence based modalities to support children and young people with mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, feelings of overwhelm, school or work challenges, grief and loss, and other situations that they may find difficult to manage alone
-
The use of interventions including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Solutions Focused Therapy
-
Counselling support with a neuroaffirming lens and an understanding of disability and how that can impact a child or young persons experiences
-
The option for parents to also access counselling services with a neuroaffirming lens, and an understanding of the unique challenges that come with having a child/ren with disability
Counselling is currently an unregistered profession - this means that people can perform the role of 'counsellor' or call themselves a professional 'counsellor' without the need for any formal qualifications or professional registration. It is important to know if your counsellor is appropriately qualified to perform their role. All counsellors at The Tribe Therapeutic Supports have the counselling qualifications required to register with the Australian Counselling Association. All clients are welcome to ask for evidence of this when booking an appointment for yourself or your child.
